Hybrid Additive and Subtractive Manufacturing

Hybrid Additive and Subtractive Manufacturing

Combining emerging manufacturing technologies with proven precision engineering.

Additive manufacturing enables complex geometries, innovative internal structures and design flexibility that traditional machining may not economically achieve.

However, producing an additive-manufactured component is often only one stage in developing a finished, functional product.

Many applications require secondary precision machining, controlled surface finishes, accurately located mechanical interfaces, threaded features, sealing surfaces, precision fits and careful integration into larger assemblies.

McMahon Micro specialises in the practical engineering processes needed to bridge these requirements.

Drawing on 37 years of precision manufacturing experience, Richard McMahon brings extensive knowledge of micro-machining, design for manufacture, complex assembly, inspection and functional validation.

This expertise can be applied to both existing additive-manufactured components and emerging product designs, helping determine suitable manufacturing sequences, machining allowances, critical tolerances and inspection strategies.

Our approach considers the complete product, not simply the individual component.

For Defence, aerospace, MedTech and scientific instrumentation, this integrated perspective can improve dimensional accuracy, mechanical performance, assembly reliability and the transition from research prototypes to practical industrial applications.

Additive manufacturing creates new design possibilities. Precision engineering helps turn those possibilities into dependable, working products.

PRECISION MANUFACTURE AND PROTOTYPE REALISATION

McMahon Micro provides in-house precision manufacture and assembly to support rapid development of electromechanical subsystems for Defence and advanced technology programs. Our capability is integrated directly into the engineering process, enabling fast iteration, tight dimensional control, and secure handling of sensitive projects.

We specialise in:

  • Tolerance-critical mechanical and micro-mechanical components
  • Precision sub-assemblies and prototype mechanisms
  • Iterative prototype development under NDA and IP constraints
  • Low-volume, high-accuracy manufacture for early-stage systems

All machining, inspection, and assembly activities are conducted internally. This allows design, manufacture, and validation to occur as a single controlled workflow, supporting rapid design evolution and reducing development risk.

IN-HOUSE CAPABILITY AND CONTROL

Our vertically integrated approach enables: Rapid design-to-manufacture iteration (hours to days, not weeks) Direct feedback between engineering, machining, and assembly Secure handling of Defence, Aerospace, and MedTech programs Full control of prototype configuration and design changes We do not outsource core machining or prototype development activities, maintaining sovereign capability and protecting sensitive project information.

PRECISION ENGINEERING ENVIRONMENT

Our facilities support development of small, complex systems requiring high accuracy and repeatability, including: Multi-axis precision machining for complex geometries Micro-scale finishing, lapping, and surface control High-resolution metrology and surface measurement Assembly, integration, and functional test capability This capability is applied across both Defence and MedTech domains, where reliability, traceability, and engineering discipline are essential.

ENGINEERING DEPTH AND PRACTICAL EXECUTION

Led by Richard McMahon, a certified master watchmaker and precision engineer, McMahon Micro combines micro-mechanical design expertise with hands-on manufacturing capability. This enables direct translation from concept to physical system, with issues identified and resolved rapidly during development — a critical advantage in early-stage, high-uncertainty programs.

COLLABORATION AND ECOSYSTEM

We operate within South Australia’s advanced manufacturing and research ecosystem, including collaboration with university partners and industry networks. McMahon Micro is a member of: Medical Technology Association of Australia (MTAA) Henderson Alliance Australian Industry and Defence Network Defence Teaming Centre
